The Navy has begun the process of retiring its oldest aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz, which was commissioned in 1975.

The USS Nimitz, the Navy’s oldest aircraft carrier, is still on active duty, homeported at Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state. Deactivation is planned for 2026 and to be completed in 2027.
