At least 10 people have been killed as a result of the wildfires, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said on Thursday.

With strong winds, dry conditions and no immediate end in sight, analysts project total economic losses of as much as $150 billion.

A pair of massive wildfires menacing Los Angeles from the east and west were still burning uncontained on Thursday, two days after they ignited, but firefighters managed to beat back another blaze scorching the Hollywood Hills.

The Eaton Fire destroyed homes in Altadena Calif., a town northeast of Pasadena. The image was captured Jan. 8 by Maxar Technologies' shortwave infrared sensor. This sensor has the ability to see through the dense smoke of an active fire to the ground beneath, as well as locating the flame front and hot spots in the fire, according to Maxar.
