A 24 year old student who was visiting his hometown of Malappuram, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, has become the second person to die from Nipah virus infection in the state this year, the country’s national laboratory confirmed on 15 September.

This is the second death caused by Nipah in Kerala since July. Nipah is classified as a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) because of its potential to trigger an epidemic. There is no vaccine to prevent infection and no treatment to cure it.

The first Nipah cases in Kerala were reported in Kozhikode in May 2018, resulting in the deaths of 17 people, including healthcare workers.

The Nipah virus has re-emerged in Kerala, marking the sixth outbreak since 2018. The latest victim is a 24-year-old student from Malappuram district who succumbed to the disease on September 9. Health officials have identified 175 individuals who had contact with him and are taking measures to prevent a larger outbreak.

After the coronavirus pandemic, several other viruses emerged that, while not as dangerous, were still significant threats. One such virus is the Nipah virus, which recently claimed a life in Kerala.
