Judges at the International Criminal Court have issued an arrest warrant for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Warrants have also been issued for Netanyahu's former defence chief Yoav Gallant and senior Hamas leader, Ibrahim Al-Masri,

An International Criminal Court arrest warrant and a corruption trial that could end his political career point to a turbulent future for the Israeli prime minister.

The ICC also issued warrants for Yoav Gallant, former Israeli defense minister, and Hamas leader Muhammad Deif. But it doesn't have an enforcement mechanism and relies on states to make the arrests.

Benjamin Netanyahu has become the fourth world leader to be issued with an arrest warrant for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC). It puts him alongside Vladimir Putin of Russia, Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya.

France said on Wednesday it believed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had immunity to actions by the International Criminal Court which is seeking his arrest for alleged war crimes in Gaza, given Israel has not signed up to the court statutes.

What Joe Biden and others are seemingly outraged by is the whole point of international law, and indeed of law itself.

"A state cannot be held to act in a way that is incompatible with its obligations in terms of international law with regards to immunities granted to states which are not party to the ICC," the French statement said.
