TVA's Nolichucky Dam survived extreme flooding, but site will take years to restore
The Nolichucky Dam is a "run-of-the-river" dam, meaning it does not provide water storage to control flooding. Under normal operating conditions, around 7,500 gallons of water spill over the dam each second. After TVA stopped generating power at the dam in 1972, its primary purpose became to support recreation in the area.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) provided an update Friday to show just how much Hurricane Helene impacted the Nolichucky Dam. Jim Bryant, Senior Program Manager with TVA Dam Safety, said he has never seen as much flooding at the Nolichucky Dam site as he did at the end of September.
