It was just yesterday that we named Japanese Breakfast as one of the 15 artists we hope release an album in 2025. Wish granted: Michelle Zauner & Co. have announced that Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), the follow-up to 2021’s Jubilee, is coming out on March 21 via Dead Ocean Records.

A lot has happened since we named Japanese Breakfast’s Jubilee our best album of 2021. Whether those three and a half years have been ones you’ve loved or ones you’ve merely gotten through, you can bet that the band, led by musician and author Michelle Zauner, has some music that can meet your mood, and they’re about ready to share it with us.

When last seen onstage in Philadelphia, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast was dressed as Saruman, the white-bearded wizard from "Lord of the Rings," on Halloween night in 2023. The band was closing out the tour behind its album "Jubilee" at the Fillmore.
