The large, bright Taurid meteors are characterized by their vibrant explosions of color and extended trails, often visible over wide areas.

The Southern Taurids will be visible near the Taurus constellation, which rises in the eastern sky soon after dark. It will be high in the sky around midnight; look for Mars and Jupiter, both nearby, as you await the bright sky streaks. (Although temper your expectations: this is a mild show, with only around 10 meteors per hour at peak.)

For the next week or so, if you happen to be outside during the overnight hours and happen to catch a glimpse of a bright and colorful "shooting star" you might very well have just caught sight of a Taurid meteor.
