BOSTON - Snow is coming to Boston and most of Massachusetts today. This "kitchen sink" winter storm will drop a few inches of snow, a layer of icy sleet pellets and freezing rain. The WBZ weather team is continuing our NEXT Weather Alert for Thursday.

Snow will likely arrive between 8 and 10 a.m., persisting into the afternoon before ice mixes in. A flip to mixed precipitation will follow in some areas, including pockets of rain and freezing drizzle, ending between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Much of the state could see up to 4 inches of snow.

Meteorologists are forecasting a series of snow storms, including 2 to 3 inches of snow in the Boston-area on Thursday before a chance for more than 6 inches this weekend.

Areas west of I-495 to Pittsfield will see more snow than any other precipitation type. New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine will welcome all snow from this system.

A fast-moving winter storm is expected to blast New York and the tristate area on Thursday morning, bringing snow, sleet and eventually rain to the region. Precipitation will begin overnight Wednesday into early Thursday morning,

The first in a parade of winter storms is headed to New England this Thursday. Snow will kick in around 8 a.m., with coverage and intensity increasing through noon — leading to the heaviest snowfall and the most widespread travel slowdowns mid-morning.

As the storm approaches, conditions will be cold enough initially for snow, but it will pull in some mild air that is expected to change the precipitation to rain for some.
