A 24-year-old student has died from the Nipah virus in the southern Indian state of Kerala, a local medical official said on Monday, and 151 people who came into contact with the victim are under observation to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

Kerala  Health Minister Veena George confirmed on Sunday that a 24-year-old man who died recently at a private hospital in Malappuram was infected with the Nipah virus. George said the suspicion of Nipah infection arose after a death investigation conducted by the Regional Medical Officer.

The health minister informed the media that a total of 151 people are currently on the primary contact list. Their information has been gathered, and those who had direct contact have been placed in isolation.

The recent outbreak of Nipah virus in Kerala has led the government to take steps to prevent the spread. Health Minister of the state, Veena George said that 175 people in the Malappuram district have been included in the contact list related to the recent Nipah virus case.
