A 24 year old student who was visiting his hometown of Malappuram, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, has become the second person to die from Nipah virus infection in the state this year, the country’s national laboratory confirmed on 15 September.

A 24-year-old student has died from the Nipah virus in the southern Indian state of Kerala, a local medical official said on Monday, and 151 people who came into contact with the victim are under observation to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George reported that 10 additional contacts of a deceased Nipah virus patient have tested negative. A total of 266 people are being monitored, with 26 high-risk individuals testing negative so far.
