DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A tornado hit Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, the National Weather Serviced confirmed.

The National Weather Service issued a warning of severe thunderstorms in central Illinois until 10:30 p.m. The alert included warnings of destructive winds of up to 80 mph and flying debris which may be harmful.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The heat index could reach 102 during the day in Augusta County, with a high temperature reaching 97.

With Connecticut already under heat advisories for the next few days, forecasters issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the southwestern part of the state.

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The National Weather Service has confirmed three EF1 tornadoes caused damage in Texarkana, Texas, and Fouke, Arkansas, on July 8. An EF1 tornado also caused damage in Cass County, Texas, and an EF0 tornado touched down in Lafayette County, Arkansas.

Forecasters are warning about severe thunderstorms that will bring the threat of hurricane-force winds, tornadoes and damaging hail to the Chicagoland area Monday evening.

A 'large and extremely dangerous' tornado was reported around 5:45 p.m. in the Des Moines area. Warnings have expired for the area.

The National Weather Service issued tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings for Northwest Indiana. A series of storms passed through Cook County into Northwest Indiana, bringing wind gusts of up to 70 mph and possible tornados.
