Definitely safe! A large number of tourists there, and you'll even see people sitting in the grass under the occasional tree to take a break. Like anywhere public, I would stay aware of your surroundings and don't make yourself a target for pickpockets. But I wouldn't say this area was any more dangerous for that than anywhere else. There is an entrance fee, which is significantly less for India residents than for foreigners.
